Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is a procedure in which a small tube called a thoracoscope is inserted through a small incision between the ribs. There is a small camera at the end of the tube. This allows the surgeon to see the entire cavity of the breast without opening the breast or pulling the ribs. Thoracoscopy can sometimes be used to treat lung cancers by removing just the part of the lung that contains the tumor (wedge resection) or the lobe of a lung.
